Tourism Market
For year ended (YE) June 2015,
Sydney remained number one
for visitor arrivals, nights and
expenditure among all of the state
capital cities of Australia.
Sydney received over 30.5 million
over night and day trip visitors for
YE June 2015, including 3.1 million
international visitors, an increase of
6.1% from the same period of last
year. Total international visitor nights
have increased from 62.9 million
in YE June 2014 to 67.3 million in
YE June 2015. Tourism expenditure
was A$6.8 billion (USD5.3 billion) by
YE June 2015, an increase of 10.6%
compared to the same period of
2014.
There were 9.02 million domestic
overnight trip visitors and 18.4
million domestic day trip visitors
recorded in YE June 2015,
representing 10.8% and 35.0%
of total visitors respectively.
Total tourism expenditure is
approximately A$8.3 billion (USD6.5
billion) for both overnight and day
trip visitors.
In terms of the purpose of visit,
for international visitors, ‘holiday’
(56.2%) was the main purpose of
visit, followed by ‘visiting friends and
relatives (VFR)’ (24.7%) and ‘business’
(12.2%). Compared to the 12 months
to March 2014, visitors who travelled
for ‘holiday’ grew by 9.7% and ‘VFR’
increased by 3.5% while ‘business’
grew by 0.7%.
The top 10 geographic origins of
visitors to Sydney for YE March
2015 are Mainland China (16.1%),
New Zealand (11.2%), USA (10.1%),
United Kingdom (10.0%), South
Korea (4.9%), Japan (4.3%), Germany
(3.7%), Singapore (3.4%), India (3.2%)
and Hong Kong (3.2%). These top 10
markets totalled 70.1% of visitation.
The top three most common
activities as voted by international
tourists visiting Sydney who were
allowed to vote multiple activities,
therefore the total does not add
to 100%, are as follows: 90% of
visitors dine at restaurants; 77.5% go
shopping and 72% go sightseeing.
Visitor nights in Sydney are forecast
to continue to reach record highs
for the next decade. During the
2014/2015 financial year, visitor
nights are predicted to increase by
7.9% to reach 92.5 million nights,
representing approximately 54.1%
of the total visitor arrivals to the
state of New South Wales (NSW). By
the 2022/2023 financial year, total
visitor nights in Sydney is targeted at
131.4 million nights, approximately
60% of total NSW visitor nights,
representing a 5.0% forecast average
annual growth over 10 years
(2012/13-2022/23).
For the whole of Australia, for YTD
July 2015, there were 7.1 million
visitor arrivals, an increase of 6.2 %
relative to the previous year.
Hospitality Industry Performance
According to STR, 1H 2015
occupancy was 84.6%, up 2.3% from
1H 2014. Occupancy for Sydney
hotels has remained steady at above
80% since 2012, finishing 2014 at an
annual occupancy of 83.7%, which
is a y-o-y growth of 1.1% from 2013.
